It is night and someone left the lights on. I can see the clouds, white as day, their shadows on the ground in front of me. Above the data centres, something out there has projected a film onto The Cloud. I stand there with my hands in my pockets and I watch the tetraptych, shifting my weight from hip to hip.
Player 1 – The Electronic Utility
Totem: Shikigami (dāsa)
Neyfs on the fields of colonus. Some with the faces of dogs. All have hoofs. Their vocabulators are stripped out, for minimal neural feedback.
One looks up at you and speaks out from behind their debt bondage mask: ‘history of fuselage is 5th heart, 18th liver, 7th nervous system, first brain’. It goes on spraying pesticides stepping over the suicide nets, wagging its tail.
A colonist with too much plastic surgery fans himself with his hat and watches with drooping eyes, cattle prod in hand. He speaks Trinity Mandarin with a Texas drawl.
They are on the edge of the wilderness. Keep going out and there are horses painted on the walls of caves and fires burning on the mountains with the silhouettes of giants moving across the valleys.
The Electronic Utility’s have all given birth to too many illegals. They love to argue publically and beat one another and drink too much and get on the electronic bull.
Player 2 – The Sentinel
Totem: Viking Bear (fylgjur)
He has claws and horns and loudly wears the China-US Joint Enterprise Peace Board Flag. Sword and shield on his back, M1 Carbine across his Nova Chainmail chest.
The Sentinel is employed by the great merchants of Mailchimp. He patrols Federal postal facilities with a gun metal grimace. ‘What the fuck are you looking at pal? Oh, you didn’t hear me?’ He draws, just like cowboys and Indians.
Post-logic. Auto-engagement and dynamic entry directives ON. Bodycam OFF. Modular baseline grids for every “frontline” corner — vantage points, kettles, the Riot Act. A portrait of the Chairman in every room, EXCEPT the toilet. That would be highly illegal. Dead canaries across the streets (first it was the bees). Their little clenched claws, frozen by ICE.
It is pouring with acid rain and the sentinel catches a glimpse of himself in the shop front window, dripping with Greater Beijing neon. White breath comes out from under his mask, chest heaving up and down, chewing gum. He flexes.
Player 3 – The Guerrilla
Totem: A Crucifix (ankh)
A gunshot. A singer, an artist, a lover, a “space paranoid”, an owner of books. FUCK THE ALGORITHM.
The same makeup as any other proselytiser. Baseline: Anger. Top 10% in self-deception and perceived collective mobilisation/ masked pugilism. CRISPR gene-edit scans results: (a) 1x Grade 2 Neurofibroma; (b) Diminished functioning: pre-frontal cortex, uncinated fasciculus tract, and amygdala; (c) Reduced grey matter — medial temporal lobe/s. China Mobile Starlink credit rating of “high-risk”.
The unhappiness came first and the cause second. She laughs. Her political psychologist is in the trunk of her AV. Her most private secret? That one confession whispered softly at night, she owns a real plant — a Lomatia tasmanica.
ZAIBATSU’s flying overhead. Advertisements on the moon. They jump from rooftop to rooftop, smuggling and fucking. Mastercard and NetsUnion. American Express and Lianlian. Ford and BYD. TikTok and Oracle. Smithfield Foods. General Electric. And always China-Mobile StarLink. Sometimes the future is sad, sometimes it is happy. Sometimes it doesn’t know how it feels.
One day, in queue to Jupiter’s airlock (Garre Du Ponce Station), guards goggle her and side-lip into their headsets. A-frames are locked and CAT-5 is called overhead and they move on her and she is terrified and self-detonates 50 metres from the E-Gate and for a second she sees it. Then ions and plasma.
Player 4 – The Computer
Totem: Casio (Antikythera)
The World Industry Complex is maintained by a ‘Decision-Support System’ called FITZ. Designed by China Mobile Starlink, FITZ has become the leader of the “backdoor technocrats”.1 It’s a simple viable system model running as a closed-loop feedback unit.
FITZ currently has the authority to M.O.P. and K.L.E.A.N, including; the production and publication of all economic forecasts and raw material reports for the World Development Commission, freezing any earnings, IPO’s, deep-space events, Smart-Contracts until XAE-12 validation, Syntegration and brain-slop governance, managing states of emergency, hiring processes, central banking functions, and social credit OS — and any required corrective action.
Design for minimal damage. Infinity mirror: Information receivers must be smarter than information transmitters (pure Autopoiesis/ Recursion). APC: Actuality, Capability, Potentiality.
The emotional core runs on an IBM360/50 mainframe, stored in China Mobile’s Head Office, Tokyo-003. The “heart of enterprise” consists of hallucinations where FITZ lives an austere life by candlelight as an old man in central Wales. Snow falls outside in the night as it sits by the fireplace, draped in a blanket.
It stares into the undulating flames with unblinking black eyes, breathing heavily, licking its lips. The purpose of the system is what it does.
The tetraptych finishes and everyone walks off down the streets, into their quiet nights and I smoke my last cigarette.
