Executive Reward

By David Scholes

sfgenre“Several of the leading CEO’s are showing resistance,” said my sidekick.

“Which ones?” I asked.

“Bloord of Teleportation Inc and Svelten of Telekinesis Pty Ltd are leading the charge.”

How dare they? The sheer temerity of those two vastly privileged individuals.

Though in truth, it came as no great surprise. Of all the multi-planet corporation CEOs these two Earth-based humans were highest paid, at least on a purchasing-power parity basis.

“Give them more Incentive,” I said.

My sidekick opened his mouth wide. “No can do, boss,” he said. “Any further Incentive will have adverse consequences!”

My mind went back to when this all started. When executive salaries just got too high — too ridiculous — and a massive public outrage ensued. We’d seen huge and violent demonstrations at hundreds of CEOs’ headquarters and even at some of their residential homes.

Something had to be done. Not just here on Earth. The head of Teleportation Inc back then had earned more per-annum than the GDP of some Earth countries.

Well, we fixed all that and then some.

The public never knew the full story. They still don’t know as far as I’m aware. It’s a well-kept secret.

The Interplanetary legislation (the first interplanetary legislation of any kind) legislated maximum salaries for all CEOs on a scale linked to the relevant planetary executive. CEOs could not earn more than the relevant Planetary Administrator and so on down the line.

For goodness sake, that was more than enough. Way more than enough!

The legislation was rigorously and energetically enforced, calming the public on more worlds than just Earth.

Yet as with all legislation there were detractors.

“The legislative salary caps aren’t enough. Not enough incentive to encourage the right people. The finest entrepreneurial minds.” Of course all of these objections came from the big end of town. The huge end.

Well — we were ready for that.

Even when they faced huge salary cuts none of the leading CEOs resigned. Or complained. If anything they seemed to work harder for their respective corporations.

Our use of the new long-lasting wonder drug Incentive — administered to CEOs without their knowledge but with the full authority of all planetary administrators — doubtless influenced their attitude.

My mind came back to the present.

“Don’t you worry about that,” I told my sidekick. “Don’t you worry about resistance to Incentive. There’s a new drug called ‘Enticement’ not yet trialled.”

Thinking of those greedy, bloated, overpaid CEOs and what we had in store for them gave me a warm inner glow, and that’s when I wondered just what drugs I might not know that I was on…
